Bluefin Tuna Commands Unprecedented Bid of 3.2 million dollars at Japanese Capital Auction
A massive bluefin tuna made headlines at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the market's opening auction of the new year.
The successful bid for the 535-pound fish was placed by the company of a nationwide sushi chain, which runs restaurants domestically and internationally.
"The first tuna signals a prosperous start," stated the company president, a notable bidder at the yearly January sale.
Dubbed the Tuna Tycoon, this businessman is famous for making substantial bids for bluefin tuna at these high-profile January auctions.
Auction Shock and Record-Setting Precedent
Following the auction, the successful bidder informed journalists that he was "astonished at the amount," stating, "I had thought we would be able to acquire it a little for less, but the price skyrocketed rapidly."
This most recent acquisition surpasses his previous notable purchases:
- He paid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
- He spent 155 million yen in 2013.
- In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).
Even after previously saying that he thought he "did too much," he has now proceeded to shatter his own record another time.
A Tradition of Exorbitant Bids
The inaugural auction at the Toyosu fish market is traditionally associated with sky-high prices. Last year, the initial tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by another sushi chain operator, which announced the fish would be available at its eateries nationwide.
The frenetic activity at the fish market during these early morning auctions has transformed into a major event in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was no different.
Immediate Consumption
The multi-million-dollar tuna was shortly thereafter prepared for diners at the bidder's sushi chains immediately after the auction ended.
"I believe like I've commenced the year in a good way after tasting something so lucky as the year begins," shared one happy patron.
