‘Every minor detail – execute them’: Guruzeta’s path from injury table to goals with Athletic Bilbao
The debut appearance the Spanish forward featured in England, an young appearing for the youth squad against Bundesliga youth at the English ground in fall 2015, he hit the target. During his subsequent match he took the field in British turf, against Sunderland following that, he converted. Another occasion, against Manchester City soon after, indeed, he scored again. Upon his comeback to the city to take on Manchester United at Leigh’s ground in that year, he did it once more. An excellent finish, also. “Truly,” he states, “it’s a top-class goal in my career.” So Athletic did what they had to do: they substituted him.
“I was furious,” the attacker says, then chuckling. “Probably there’s a recording. We went to play United and I was pretty good. They kept me out of the latter period: I was without a signed deal, I was scoring goals, speculation was rife, as you’d expect. No confirmation on the Magpies’ pursuit, but I remember reading about the Red Devils, the typical thing. I’m not certain how true it was, but had they contacted me, I would have wanted to stay at Athletic. It’s a privilege.”
Real Sociedad release pressure with surreal victory in Basque derby like no other
At the facility, the Basque Country, the day’s first practice is ready to commence; after it, the brief trip to the airport and a further journey to the UK, now to play Newcastle in the UCL on the upcoming match. Uttering the name brings a smile to his face. It has become a challenging campaign for the team, due in part to the pressures of competing at this level. Losing in stoppage time in the weekend clash, they have won only one of their recent league fixtures and been defeated by Arsenal and Dortmund in Europe. Yet, take in the big picture, the big nights he has lived and upcoming events, and he feels a calm gratitude about him.
In the the period since he had come back to Athletic, the striker has been a final four contender in Europe, stopped at the gates the showpiece event by United, and has boarded a decades-old barge along the Nervión river flanked by a million fans after securing the Spanish cup, the team’s initial silverware in a long wait. Currently he stands as Athletic’s top scorer in the Champions League, where they are countercultural and making their first appearance in a decade. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he states.
Guruzeta thought it hard enough just to make the first team and he was right. Born to the former Real Sociedad player his father and a season ticket holder at the team he now opposes, the forward is from the Antiguoko academy, the local academy that developed the coach, the legendary midfielder and the Bournemouth manager. His move to Athletic came at his teens but after his top-level debut in the 2018 season, he suffered a ACL injury, the cut, a drop in category and a call back before he could earn his place, returning at 26 to live the best days of the club’s history.
“Joining the setup not expecting to reach the top level but each step you go through you’re still there and you can observe the approach. You make it and … departure is necessary.” He featured briefly in six matches in six games between his debut and February 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games at that level and I suffered the ACL injury.
“A severe disappointment but In retrospect as something positive because it made me change the outlook. Healing from a serious ailment is challenging, but it aids growth. You cultivate routines new to you. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I would go to training and then go home, as a youngster does. In the facility, facilities are comprehensive, so utilize it all. Practice, prevention. Hit the weights. Should your hips be uneven, work on that. With decent ankle function, enhance it further. All those ‘silly things’: perform them.
“At the top level you’re going to crash into players who have crashed into players 200,000 times. They’re so strong. Reviewing old images: my legs are chicken legs. Injuries are inevitable. Current photos and the improvement is clear. Injury made me see that. Sessions end, but further effort is needed. Peers are prepared, really ready; the same applies.”
Minutes are crucial. Guruzeta departed emotionally in 2020, at 23 years old, moving to a lower level. At Sabadell in 2020-21, he got three strikes in 40 games. With Amorebieta in the following period, the he found his form. “Players go through it: temporary moves, ended deals. If you turn it round, work, believe, and when eventually they need someone where you play, they might come back for you. You have to be ready. When the opportunity came, it was a dream come true. Lifting the cup, European football, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”
Understandably he remarks savor the moment. All the more so after last year which, sometimes, was about endurance. From top scorer with a high tally, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
