Heat and Trail Blazers Secure Initial Victories Following Recent Detentions
Miami scored 86 opening half scores against the Memphis Grizzlies
Miami Heat claimed a overwhelming 146-114 victory over the Grizzlies in their first NBA match since guard Terry Rozier was detained for alleged unlawful sports betting.
Trail Blazers coach Billups was also detained as part of a broad federal probe into sports betting. The two individuals contest the allegations.
But, the Heat were not distracted as they put up 86 first-half points to lead the Grizzlies by 39 at halftime, the largest half-time advantage in the team's 37-year existence.
Adebayo top-scored with 24 points and afterwards said Rozier had the support of the team.
"We support him. Complete backing," Adebayo stated. "You support him through and through. That's our brother ultimately."
Miami head coach Spoelstra added: "Rozier is a person who is very dear to everyone. He's had a beneficial influence on our team.
"We send our thoughts and our care for him as he faces this."
Portland also won their first game after the arrests, with Brazilian Tiago Splitter taking over as temporary head coach in Chauncey's absence and guiding the team to a decisive 139 to 119 win over the Warriors.
"Everyone experienced great experiences with Chauncey and his coaching style," Tiago said. "Our thoughts are with him and his family but we have a job to do."
League Commissioner Silver 'Upset' over Recent Events
Addressing the detentions for the first time, league head Adam Silver said he was "very upset" by the events of the past few days.
"There's nothing more important to the NBA and supporters than the fairness of the game," he informed Amazon Prime. "Therefore I felt uneasy. It was disturbing."
The commissioner also said an NBA investigation into the player's conduct in spring 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a game he played for the Charlotte Hornets versus the New Orleans Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"It was brought to our attention by the authorities and the betting companies," he continued.
"We investigated that situation and were very transparent about it. And while there was that aberrational betting, we, frankly, found no evidence.
"The federal government has subpoena power... [it] can impose penalties, can do all kinds of things that the league office is unable to.
"Therefore, we've been working with them since then. Naturally, what they announced yesterday was an indictment.
"Moreover two and a half years after, he still hasn't been convicted of any offense, in justice to Rozier.
"Obviously, it appears unfavorable, but he's been suspended, and so it is a compromise here between protecting people's rights and investigating."
