Thomas Tuchel Desires Bellingham's Passion So Long As England's Ace Leaves His Ego Outside.

A single omission proved sufficient. Another and it could have seemed vindictive from the England manager, who is far too wily not to realize that claiming the World Cup trophy will likely need contributions by Jude Bellingham, even if it is also Bellingham's responsibility to blend into the game plans and team pecking order required with the national team now that he is returned to Tuchel's warm embrace.

Tuchel desires Bellingham's edge, his fire, but it is a matter of channeling it constructively. Individual quality counts but the squad understand from past setbacks that there is a cost when fame dominates. Still, a point has been made.

Bellingham was given food for thought after his omission of the previous squad. He watched the national side secure their spot at the upcoming World Cup without him. He watched the young talent perform brilliantly as a counterpressing attacking midfielder. He listened as the coach mention loving the team's dynamism and principles. Naturally, Bellingham has responded in champion style, netting important strikes for Real Madrid against Barcelona and Juventus. He had to be picked; another omission would have left his World Cup hopes in serious doubt.

The expectation is that Tuchel will have a midfielder concentrating on frightening rivals instead of teammates. Ultimately, from a tactical perspective, there is no value to starting a conflict with an elite performer in the world. The best outcome is that his period not playing has made him realize that an international career is a precious, precarious thing. Tuchel, for his part, can now provide cover around the 22-year-old after proving that he is not afraid to make big calls.

“There is no problem regarding him, and no concern about his personality,” Tuchel said. “Jude displays the edge. You need a certain edge to reach the heights that he reached. We all must support him and create an environment where he can [have] this edge against rivals and for the objectives we are building as a team.”

Bellingham took up the spotlight at Tuchel’s squad announcement for the upcoming dead-rubber qualifiers against Serbia and Albania. Who else? Well, what about another talent? This is a further gifted No 10 who needs love and guidance. Foden has not played for England since March and has found it hard to reach his best this year but the boss was impressed by the player after his display in his club's victory against the German side this week.

The issue, however, is how to use the various creators at the team's disposal. Rogers and Eberechi Eze merit inclusion and there will be a strong case to include Cole Palmer once he is fit after a fitness issue. Is selecting five No 10s to the World Cup be excessive? The previous manager never found the right blend at the European Championship. He made concessions by forcing Foden and Bellingham into the starting lineup, cramping Harry Kane’s influence as a result.

It seems unlikely Tuchel doing similar if it disrupts the attacking balance. There is room for a single playmaker, with fast wide players on the flanks. Clarity is beneficial. He is selected as a central attacker. The new call-up, called up for the first occasion, is a No 8 and the recalled Wharton will vie with another player as a No 6. There will also be no wide role for Foden, who must play through the middle. Tuchel prefers him near the striker. “It does not make sense to ask Foden: ‘You are needed on the pitch but there’s no space on your best position, can you play the left side? Can you play right wing?” he said. “Phil will play in the advanced midfield role, through the center. I've long had this idea regarding him for a long time. In my view it suits him the most.”

He conceded there are times when the player has not looked himself in an England shirt. “One senses as if, ‘Is he truly happy? And a player like him who has such natural delight for the game, then obviously an issue exists, be it his role, the environment, I don’t know.

“I think he is additionally accustomed to playing for his club in a specific system, with a clear task. I think he profits greatly from clarity. What is my position? Where exactly am I to receive the ball? Where am I supposed to push the tempo? Where do I have to defensive duties?”

The manager talked about Bellingham bursting through for tap-ins and Foden scoring strikes from 18 yards. He said he has a longlist of 60 players. Morgan Gibbs-White, Myles Lewis-Skelly, James Trafford and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been omitted. A new face is rewarded for his fine form for Manchester City at left-back. Interest is high.

Leaving out of the striker means there is no direct replacement for the captain in the selection. Interestingly, Tuchel hinted at using Foden as a false 9 against one opponent or Albania. Anthony Gordon, the United forward, Bellingham and the winger are other options should he be unavailable. With qualification secured, this is an opportunity for trying new things.

At the same time, it is additionally a moment to foster Kane’s relationship with Bellingham going. It's surprising that you have to go back to Bellingham setting up the captain to score in a friendly win versus Scotland in September 2023 to find the sole instance in 35 games for the national team when the duo combined for a score. Tuchel will know that Kane and Bellingham only exchanged the ball a single time during England’s draws with Denmark and another at the European Championship. Their partnership is lacking.

“At this point eventually it becomes the duty of the individuals,” Tuchel said. He is not afraid to deliver home truths. Remains a feeling of Bellingham having to prove himself. He may not be guaranteed to begin against the upcoming opponents. The manager desires him onside but he will be monitoring him carefully. Leave the ego outside. Doing so could turn a very strong squad into an even better one.
